Just got a request for a spec section on gabions. These are those wire baskets with rocks that are used for retaining walls. There is a lot of information on the Internet regarding the baskets themselves (Products), but nothing I could find on how they are used to prepare and build the retaining wall (Execution). Would appreciate suggestions on finding a sample section if anyone knows of one.

I assume that there is an engineer, typically civil or geotechnical, who will define this system. I would talk to thisindividual regarding a specification to use.

I actually found six acceptable companies that make the wire baskets, engineer and install the walls, but I was just checking to see if anyone else had gone through this process before I create a new section from scratch. The system isn't drawing up yet, so I have no idea what the wall looks like. I'll just put the title in the Table with a To Be Provided note for now.

David,
I have an older section that I must have prepared based on Tensar International Corporation products in 2007. It has a detailed part 3, but I have no CA feedback on it. Shall I send you a copy offline?

Lisa

That would be appreciated. I assembled aeveral documents regarding the process, but would like to see a model of a previous section before starting from scratch. Email is deloren@scip.com.

Dave,

UFGS has master for wire mesh gabions. http://www.wbdg.org/ccb/DOD/UFGS/UFGS%2031%2036%2000.pdf
New York too...although... http://ogs.state.ny.us/dnc/generalInfo/MasterSpecMF04/html/313600.htm
You might also search state DOTs. CALTRANS has one.

Thanks for the UFGS suggestion. I forgot to check there. I did get a nice section from Lisa Goodwin Robbins that was quick to format, edit, and insert in my project manual going out today. Thanks to all who helped out.
