I haven't opened a PDF yet, but was struck by how close the order of the manual is to what we have now... |

One difference: I looked at the 8 page Brick Masonry PDF and they dispense with materials in a little more than a page and the rest is what we think of as Part 3 - Execution. There is also a nice pen and ink sketch of an expansion joint squeezed in. |

WORKMEN'S CLOSETS: The Mason and Carpentry Contractor shall provide temporary earth closet at the beginning of the work at the site enclosed in a temporary shed and provided with all supplies. Such shall be for the use of workmen of all contractors, without charge. When water and sewer are placed fit up a water closet with connections, etc., and remove the earth closet. (I'll admit I didn't know what an "earth closet" was until I read this paragraph) The shed and fixtures shall be kept clean and in sanitary condition, and water connections protected from frost, remove same at completion. Wood boxes containing sand for spittoon shall be placed in rooms and halls with finished floors and printed signs shall be hung forbidding spitting on floors or walls. For those of you smart alecks out there ready to pounce on this, I DID NOT help Gilbert write these specs [I was working in another office]. And I don't recall George Everding being with Gilbert then, either Ha, ha, ha!!!! Sorry to spoil your fun!! Seriosuly, note the compliance with the NBFU building code [old National Building Code]. This was the first nationally-used code of substance, written and adopted in 1905 as a result of the 1871 Chicago fire. It primarily protected the buildings [the risk upon the insurance companies] and not the occupants [as does the code today.] |

I noticed that each section references the General Conditions. No matter your viewpoint on this, precident certainly goes back a long time. Some habits are hard to break. |
