What's the best approach for specifying wood stains for interior woodwork that is required to match the finish of previously installed woodwork (by another architect). There are many different stain types (alkyd, water based, etc) and would all need to be listed in the spec in order to properly address the existing stain? That seems excessive.

One approach is to have painter submit sample pieces to illustrate match with existing, without being specific to the material used. Painters usually has good instincts about material used in previous applications.

Seems your primary concern is the match of existing no matter what material can do that job. No sense putting yourself at risk by specifying materials that may not do the job.

Also, at least for site-applied stains, VOC regulations may limit what types of stains can be applied.

Painting and Decorating Contractors(PDCA) has a series of industry standards that can be helpful. PDCA Standard P5-09 "...establishes a procedure for the submission and approval of benchmark samples which will serve to determine achievable quality from specified preparation, paint and coating systems." I got my copies on CD, but I think they now have them online for download. www.pdca.org
