In what section(s) do you specify barrels for rainwater harvesting? A number of locations come to mind...individual material sections, 221400-Facility Storm Drainage, maybe somewhere in Divisions 07 or 10?

Just barrels themselves, or are they tied into some sort of system via piping, etc.?

If tied in, spec with that system;
If alone, perhaps just items of equipment, Division 11

First, the water would need to be directed to the rain barrel, by some system of gutters, scuppers, rainleaders and all, and those would go in a "07 60 something" Section.

At that point I would be torn between just putting them in there, or the alternate, referring from there to where I did decide to put them. Sort the same thought process I would go through with the thing they are in a sense replacing: precast splash blocks.

They are wood barrals located to collect water from downspouts. I've been tempted to put them in 07 62 00 where the downspouts are specified. Steven, your annalogy to splash blocks makes sense as I've seen concrete splash blocks specified with sheet metal drainage fabrications.

This is a small example of where MasterFormat could get more in step with sustainable technologies. In a future revision of MasterFormat, a 10 74 00 - Manufactured Exterior Specialties section could be used to specify rain barrels. They certainly aren't necessarily the 55-gallon variety. There are some nicely designed barrels out there.

I put them in 33 -

These are a bit more of a system in that pumps and filters can be included.

Colin, I think your choice is most the most elegant. There can be a clear distinction for the contractor at the point the downspouts meet the rain barrels even though we specifiers are not dictating (or even suggesting) allocation of trades.
