I have an Interior Designer who wants me to specify that all ceiling products (Access Panels, Speaker grilles, Sprinkler heads etc etc) are all factory finished so they they are all consistently finished. I am thinking that asking each individual manufacturer to finish them independently would cause more INconsistency among the finishes than field painting.

Can sprinkler heads be factory finished?

How does everyone else handle the finishing of exposed ceiling components in a high-end public space?

Robin,

You are absolutely correct. No two manufacturers will have the same exact finish.

As for sprinkler heads - they can only be factory-finished - they cannot be field painted.

Richard is correct. NFPA 13 states "Sprinklers shall only be painted by the sprinkler manufacturer."

Manufacturers of the other components or devices may have similar restrictions for warranty reasons.

If you specify a specific color, even if they're slightly off, they're likely not to be as noticeable as if some were black, others white, and couple of others red.

thanks. I knew sprinkler heads either had to be field painted or factory...just couldn't remember which one. They will have to match the adjacent colors (per Interior Designer). She wants them exactly the same.
Rich - Ron and I have an excuse for being inside at the computer - it's 110 outside - what's your excuse????

Good luck getting the sprinkler mfgr to "excatly" match the ceiling.
You will probably have to provide them with a sample of the adjacent finish and there will most definately be some type of upcharge. Same may be true for the other mfgrs, if you ask for a special color match.

As for being inside on the computer -
I know - I'm an idiot - it's mid 70's here in Newport Beach and here I am trying to wrap up a project for next week - Such is my luck!

Referencing the color using an industry-recognized color coating matching system (eg RAL) is probably better than using a specific manufacturer's paint color. Even so, though, specify that each manufacturer submit samples so they can be compared to the designer's samples.
