I am working on a large project and want to break out metal finishes into a separate section - does anyone have something like this (that includes Kynar-type, powder coating etc) that they would be willing to share as a starting point for me? robin@spectraspecs.com. All assistance is appreciated! |

You are talking about Section 05 05 13, Shop-Applied Coatings for Metal? That's what i use for that, includes anodic coatings, fluoropolymer, and other specialty coatings including powdered coatings. MF2004 also puts galvanic coaings here as well. William |

The idea of specifying metal finishes in distinct "metal finishing" sections is consistent with "say it once and in the most appropriate location." Rather than specifying the fluoropolymer paint finish for aluminum in four or five sections with aluminum products --- and risk error should the finish color, etc. change --- I typically use a Division 05 Section as suggested by William. Similarly, I also have a galvanized finish Section. I find that MF04 is not as conducive as MF95 to numbering and titling these Sections. Only by using Level 4 numbers (.13, .16, etc.) do these work under MF04. Another so-called improvement of MF04. |

I used a Section 05030 Metal Finishes in a former firm for all metal finishes. I currently use 09960 (MF95) High Performance Finishes for High Performance coatings (those still allowed by SCAQMD), Kynar-based coatings, and powder coated finishes. I like the idea of just having it in one place, especially when dealing with a number of sections requiring these finishes. |

Rich: I think the idea of a Division 05 Section for this painted finish is that it is applied in a shop or factory. My interpretation of MasterFormat is that the painting and coating Sections in Division 09 specify field-applied products ... er, specify field-accomplished work resultings or something like that. |

Tiger/Drylac has a very wide range of powder coating options, including a flouropolymer powder coat. They have some psuedo-specs on their website at http://www.tigerdrylac.com/index.php?id=664&L=0%20onfocus%3DblurLink%28this%29%3B (you have to use Google "search this site" to get there, no direct link I could find). Their contact for the southeast is Jeff Helmintoller, (770) 218-2490, a very knowledgeable gentleman who gave an enlightening TechTalk on powder coatings at our CSI chapter. MPI has very complete guide specs in general, if you know where to find them on their website. (www.specifypaint.com, requires subscription login.) Not sure if they address shop applied some, I'd have to take a closer look. Direct link (if you are logged in) is http://www.specifypaint.com/Contents_ASM/Chapter4_GUIDESPEC/fullspec.doc You could also try to contact Barry Law at bgl@mpi.net, he was MPI President recently and is a good resource person. Another possibility, PPG has a good Product MASTERSPEC, but it is in Division 09 geared towards field applied. I'm sure a call to your PPG rep, along w/ a call to a local metal fabricator could go a long way towards tailoring it to a shop applied approach. The easy way out is keep all the products in division 09, and cross reference to 05 for application; and cross reference back to be sure they get this on both ends. If you are coating anything structural, make sure your structural engineer knows the plan. |
