Why are roof hatches and floor doors in Division 7 (moisture and thermal protection) and not in Div 8 (openings)?

Another masterformat mistery to be solved.

History.
Although louvers and vents did migrate from Div 10 to Div 08.

I can only guess because historically they are "ROOF ACCESSORIES" and not "SPECIALTY DOORS AND FRAMES."

I did not find floor doors in the keyword index (looked under door to doors, floor to flooring), although they are manufactured by the same companies that manufacture roof hatches.

There is latitude in Section 08 30 00 for floor doors.

This is not rocket surgery. Spec it where you think is most logical.

Roof hatches are where they always were--an accessory to roofing in Division 07. I don't see floor doors in Division 07, in fact, I couldn't find them in MasterFormat at all. AIA Masterspec includes them in Division 08 (with access doors) which I think is a reasonable spot.

We specify floor access doors in Section 08 31 23.

Roof hatches in Division 07 for the reasons stated above.

I think it is important to remember that the CSI numbering is all about systems - not specific materials or products. Therefore it is inherently a conflicting system and opinions will vary as to the best location for some items. Steel reinforcement is in Division 03 for concrete and Division 04 for masonry, yet you don’t find it in Division 05 for steel. Gypsum sheathing is in Division 06 for wood and plastic products.

I assume that roofing accessories (like roof hatches) are kept near the roofing material sections because their installation affects the warrantees on the roofing and can therefore be considered part of the overall roofing system. They are separated into another section just for convenience. Like many products, there is more than one category where they could reasonably be placed.

Well said Richard. You have stated very well the guiding philosphy of the task team.

The Includes and May Includes lists in the explanations often illustrate the possible multiple locations for particular materials and products.

In this particular case the Includes statement under 08 31 00 could have been better written if it also included floors in addition to walls and ceilings.

I agree that specifications should be about systems, and that systems should be grouped.

That is why one change in the MasterFormat 2004 really caught my eye the first time it came up.

"Site Furnishings" did not move with other the site improvements from DIVISION 2 to DIVISION 32. For some mysterious reason, it got stuck moving upstream on a snag in DIVISION 12 called "Other Furnishings". Located right after church pews and benches, 12 67 00, and officially 12 93 00. Now, "Isn't that convenient".
