Is anyone using AIA Masterspec Multi-File for headers and footers? If so, does it work for you? It seems to fail repeatedly. It is a "rich text" editor and has inherent limitations, but is still supposed to insert section titles and numbers (and other fields) left, center, or right justified. If you don't use this tool from Masterspec, how do you automate headers/footers? Thanks in advance! |

I use Masterspec’s Multi-file for headers and footers all the time. I had problems with it sometimes when I was using WordPerfect, but never in Word format. In the past, when I’ve had problems with Masterworks, I only had to call Arcom. They were pretty good at walking me through what needed to be done to get it working correctly. |

I also use the multi-file all the time for both headers and footers -- even the ones that alternate odd and even pages, and insert a whole bunch of codes for various things (title of section, section number, page, date, etc) with no problem. there are some issues with some versions of Word, but Arcom has fixes for all of the issues I've had. their support folks are very good and they can even "take over " your computer for you and fix the code long distance if you're as un-nimble as I am. |

I use the multi-file exclusively for headers, footers, tables of contents, reports, etc. If you have difficulties call Matt at Arcom tech support at 1-800-424-5080. Matt will walk you through the process. He is very good. There is some text that must be present in the file summary dialogue box to make the multi-file system work without a hitch. One line that must be correct is Keywords. If box in blank add BAS-12345-MS80. The Title and Subject lines must exactly match the name of the SCT style. Open a native MasterSpec document to view what I am refering to. FILE/PROPERTIES/SUMMARY |

I regularly use the multi-file function on my own documents (without BAS-12345-MS80 text in the Keywords field). What I have been told is that their routine looks for the word "Section" followed by a series of numeric characters and then alpha characters. These do not have to be on the same line; however, my own experience indicated to me that I needed a space between the end of a string of characters and any "return" character. The only problem I have had is getting Mult-File to recognize different types of hyphens (dashes, en dashes, em dashes, and hyphens) in Word. I always have to go back and insert them in any list I create. |

Matt at Arcom did assist with troubleshooting. I was having trouble inserting "Page X of Y" and some other issues. It turned out to be MS Word problems. Worked through the troubleshooting in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289506 and that solved the problem. The previous message indicated that the software looks for "Section". This probably explains why the routine wouldn't work on Division 0 "Documents". Do you manually edit Division 0 document header/footers? |

Anonymous, RE: Your question in you 2nd paragarph I have no problems with changing headers and footers in Division 00 documents. MSWord and the multi-file functions work the same regardless of MF04 uses the term Document for Division 00. Make certain the required fields are correctly filled out as requried in the Summary dialogue box. Wayne |

Wayne, I tried changing a Masterspec section to "Document" and corresponding file properties on the Summary tab. The multi-file header footer tool would not insert the document title in the header. If this works for you, would you mind emailing a sample "doc" to tom@bmaworld.com? Thanks |

Tom, In the MSWord file, check that the assigned "Style" for the DOCUMENT # - NAME is SCT. If not, make it so. The Document name can be DOCUMENT 00 00 00 - DOCUMENT NAME. Document number format can be 00 00 00 or 00 0000 or 000000 as you wish. In the FILES/PROPERTIES/SUMMARY dialogue box, copy/paste DOCUMENT 000000 - DOCUMENT NAME into first box but remove spaces from the document # (IMPORTANT). Copy/paste DOCUMENT NAME alone into second box i.e. without the number. In Keywords add BAS-12345-MS80 if missing. BAS = BASIC 12345 = who knows? MS80 = MSWord 8.0 You should be good to go. I will do as you request and send a sample file. Good luck. Wayne |

Wayne, Tried all as you noted, copying their 06100 and changing from "section" to "document" in the file, leaving SCT, NAM, and NUM styles "as is". In the file properties, summary tab, made the change from "section" to "document". Multi-file header and footer software does not insert the Document Title or Number in a header. You said this works for you. I can email the word doc to you (to check out) if you send me an email to the address noted a couple of messages above. Thanks, Tom |

Tom, I lied like a rug. After putting my foot in my mouth, I discovered my FILES/PROPERTIES/SUMMARY dialogue box uses the term Section. I called Matt ARCOM to discuss only to discover ARCOM and hence AIA MasterSpec do not address Div 00 documents. To specialized I guess. The Header/Footer tool in Multi-File does look to the SCT paragraph style in the MSWord file for the word SECTION. Sorry I did not solve your problem. Wayne |

We use Masterworks MultiFile all the time (several times a week) for headers and footers and it works VERY well. But you have to understand how it works and play by those rules. The macros (in Word) use "document properties" and they must be correct for each document - if you copy or rename a file and don't change the document properties, then it will put bad info in these documents. Also it is VERY dependent on the styles of the headers and footers being unchanged from standard Masterspec styles. Once you start overlaying different fonts and other characteristics, if you run MultiFile headers/footers then you will end up with a mess. |
