Anyone have experience or suggestions for electronic transmission of Project Manual e-files? I've just encountered a situation where one recipient's mailbox limit was smaller than the single e-file attachment and another's "IT" filters-out zip files. For less-sophisticated clients that don't have project FTP sites, are there any alternatives? I've heard of "private storage" websites, but I'm not sure how they work...nor how secure they are. If anyone has any experience with those types of "online storage" sites, I'd appreciate hearing of your experiences. Thanks. |

I recently received a 10 meg image using: http://www.yousendit.com I would look at the security as security through being obscure, and look to delete the file as soon as it is downloaded. Also good for multiple recipients - you upload once and multiples can download the file. |

My office is looking into this package right now: http://www.xlattach.com/ We have an FTP site, but my IT guys don't like to maintain it. They think this will help. I haven't done a thourough review and testing of it yet. We are also considering Newforma, and it has a terrific solution for this sort of thing, but it does a lot more also. |

The commercial project sites have better security than your FTP site. You also get a record of who was there and what they viewed. |

Being a Mac user, I have a ".Mac" account, and that allows me considerable storage online as part of the basic cost (which has many other benefits as well). It lets me create a "public folder" and password protect it. And I can change the password protection as well as 'hide' the folder any time I want. I have exchanged files in this manner, Win systems need a small utility to work with the folder. Also, a windows user can have a ".Mac" account and set up from their end. I have exchanged full project manuals thorugh this system, and its as simple as drag and drop, there is no navigation, or ftp type effort. On the windows side, the utility simply asks for the folder and user and password information, and then mounts the folder like its a drive. Again, you just drag and drop in both directions to add or retrieve files. It can be made read and retrieve only, or read/write privileges. Its an extremely secure site, its on Apples own server system. William |

If it were me, I'd put the pressure on the recipient. There is little technical reason for this problem today. If they can't receive the file sizes that are common today I'd send them a CD by snail mail. (Or do they need it on a floppy disk?) |

Winzip is marketing some new "delivery" service for delivering large files via internet. I don't know any more about it - check out their website. |
