Having a senior moment and would appreciate your help. Have we discussed the situation where a big hitter client wants to delete specifications and merely use their "engineering standards" instead? Seems to me we did, but can't locate it in the archvies. If not, can we start a discussion right now? Thanks for your guidance |

I don't recall that, only clients wanting to delete specifications, or delete all references in specifications. We're doing work for a very well-known university client in Cambridge (no, not that one, the other one) who has a fairly comprehensive engineering standards manual. It's very good in that it captures all of the stuff that gives them maintenance headaches over the long haul. We only have to make sure our designs conform to the manual. But, unfortunately, it is out-of-date in many respects. For example, they require alkyd paint on all surfaces, but also require "green" design. The problem with using such a manual in lieu of specifications depends in part on how well they keep it current and accurate. For my part, I hope to convince our client to hire us to help them update the manual. |

We have had and are having some similar experiences. One wants their engineering standards ONLY! Really having a time here [reason for the inquiry] One wants specs meeting their standards when an A/E is involved. Otherwise they use just their standards only for plant engneerring projects done without A/Es, but with known/repeat/ reliable contractors [who want the work however] Dating and obsolete products, and merged manufacturers are constant hazards. |

John- this is a good marketing moment. I just finished revising/updating the University of Washington small project master and we got a reasonable fee for the effort. The UW does a revision/update on their specs every three years and their Facility Design Information is continually updated. Anne |

The problem was mine - I never checked that the search was working. I just reindexed the forum and you should be able to search now. I'll try and reindex every weekend. All forums, including the archives at the bottom, are included. Let me know anytime something - including links in the directory - do not work. |

I started that specification dilemna thread due to a problem I had encountered on a condominium project where the Developer had retained a separate consultant who wanted our firm and the other consultants to perform a major revision to the specifications that included eliminating references to Industry Standards especially in Part three on each perspective spec section. It was a long fight, but thanks to the support I received from this forum I stood my ground and won, the specifications for the most part remain the same. Unfortunately, I can not discuss too much more about this in this forum as we are in the middle of resolving issues that came forth during our fight, but I hope to have an update available soon and perhaps I can explain why this dilemna occurred in the first place and why for other architects preparing contract documents for condominiums it is a continuing problem. If anyone reading this thread is contemplating preparing CD's for a condominium in FL, please feel free to email me and I will share what I know: lazarcitec@msn.com. |
