SHORT-FORM SPECIFICATIONS - 12

Copyright 2001 by Herman R. Hoyer, PE, FCSI, CCS

As I promised in my Column No. 11, today we will examine Section 07600 - Flashing and Sheet Metal, another typical pecification section written in the short-form mode, as follows:

SECTION 07600 - FLASHING AND SHEET METAL

A. Applicable Standards: Fabricate and install flashings and sheet metalwork in accorance with applicable requirements of SMACNA's Architectural Sheet Metal Manual.

B. Submittals: Submit fully detailed shop drawings.

C. Galvanized Sheet Metal: Standard galvanized steel sheet meeting requirements of ASTM A653/A653M and ASTM A924/A924M, as applicable, with minimum zinc coating of 1.25 oz./square foot and 0.2 percent copper bearing, and mill phosphatized for maximum paint adherence. Where gage is not indicated, provide 24 gage.

D. Sheet Lead: ASTM B29, standard 0.062-inch thick lead sheet weighing 4 lbs. per square foot. Provide sheet lead for flashing of vent pipes and other penetrations of the roof.

E. Solder: ASTM B32, Grade A, warranted pure. Flux: approved brand of soldering flux or muriatic acid killed with zinc.

F. Building Paper: Reinforced water-repellent paper meeting requirements of Fed. Spec. UU-B-790, Type I, Grade A.

G. Fasteners and Accessories: Provide anchorage devices and fasteners, straps, and accessories as required for a complete and finished installaion. Fasteners and accessories shall be nonferrous.

H. Sealant: ASTM C920, Type S or M, Grade NS, Class 25, silicone or polyurethane elastomeric sealant, with Use designation appropriate for the substrate as recommended by the sealant manufacturer.

I. Gutters and Downspouts: Fabricate and install gutters and downspouts in accordance with the approved shop drawings and pertinent provisions of the SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual.

Another Specification Section written in the short-form mode--less than a page in length. Again this is a complete section, without having left out any important information. Please reread my Column No. 11 which dealt with Section 03200. The basic principles and fundamentals described in this column apply equally to Section 07600. And our reference standard for this Section is SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual," a complete, professionally prepared and illustrated reference standard for sheet metalwork. You can't do any better than that.

Note again that paragraph A., Applicable Standards, covers both fabrication and installation of the products. This is a short but powerful paragraph and its ramifications and application need to be fully understood. Paragraph I., Gutters and Downspouts, also covers both fabrication and installation. This is another illustration of why the Section Format is not appropriate for short-form specifications. Under the Section Format, fabrication and installation would have to be broken up into two different sentences, one for fabrication under Part 2 - Products, and one for installation under Part 3 - Execution. For this example section, I chose to specify galvanized sheet steel, instead of copper, stainless steel, or aluminum, as the most commonly used material for flashings and sheet metalwork. The specifics for this type of work which need to be specified are the materials as indicated in paragraphs C. through H. Altogether now, we have a complete section.

I'm not sure yet what subject my next column will cover. It may be Drawing Notes, Design-Build Specifications, key Division 1 Sections, or some other intriguing aspect of Short-Form Specifications. Keep tuned for the next exciting episode.
