SHORT-FORM SPECIFICATIONS - 7

Copyright 2000 by Herman R. Hoyer, PE, FCSI, CCS

For this installment of the column, we'll continue with Basic Tenet No. 3 by providing you with a copy of my Section 01423, Reference Standards, as promised in the last installment.

SECTION 01423 - REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. References:

1. The Contract Documents contain references to various standard specifications, codes, practices, and requirements for materials, work quality, installation, inspections, and tests, which references are published and issued by the organizations listed below by abbreviation and name. Such references are hereby made a part of these Contract Documents to the extent indicated or required.

2. The specifications and standards of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) are identified in the various Sections by abbreviation and number only (not by title) and are not further identified, because it is assumed that the Contractor is familiar with, and has ready access to, specified ACI, ANSI, and ASTM Specifications and Standards.

3. When the effective date of a reference standard is not given, it shall be understood that the current edition or latest revision thereof and any amendments or supplements thereto in effect on the date of issue of these Contract Documents, as indicated by the date on the cover (or in the Invitation to Bid), shall govern the Work.

4. Reference standards are not furnished with the Contract Documents, because the Contractor, subcontractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and the trades involved are assumed to be familiar with their requirements. The Contractor shall obtain copies of referenced standards direct from publication sources as needed for proper performance and completion of the Work. The Architect will furnish, upon request, information as to how copies of specified standards may be obtained.
4. The Contractor shall provide and maintain referenced standards at the jobsite field office or other acceptable location as needed for proper performance and completion of the Work. The Architect may require to see or refer to such referenced standards at the jobsite, as applicable.

B. Abbreviations: Whenever in the Specifications the abbreviation or acronym is specified, it shall be understood to mean the full name of the respective organization, as follows:

AAMA American Architectural Manufacturer's Association
ACI American Concrete Institute
AISC American Institute of Steel Construction
APA American Plywood Association
AWS American Welding Society
CRSI Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute
NEMA National Electrical Manufacturer Association
SDI Steel Door Institute
WIC Woodwork Institute of California

* * *
The above list of abbreviations and corresponding names is only a partial list, given here as an example. Your Section 01423 should give a complete listing of all the referenced organizations specified throughout your project Specifications. List only those organizations invoked or cited in the body of your Specifications.

In our next installment, we will cover Tenet No. 4, the use of "Streamlining" to shorten sentence structure.
