NEW WAY OF PUTTING “U” IN CSI
by Ralph Liebing. RA, CSI, CDT
Cincinnati, OH

How recently have you talked to an architectural or engineering college student about your work as a specifications writer or in regard to specifications? Tough topic! Now surely you are not embarrassed to do this, but the occasion just did not present itself—right?

Well, how about this: if there was such an occasion would you be willing to talk [not pontificate!!!] about your work, and the fit into construction projects and project documents? You would??????

OK! Let’s go do it, NOW!!!!

First, we contact every [and I mean EVERY!!] university/college of architecture and engineering, community college, technical institutes, professional offices, and professional organizations, and tell them what we are going to do. Oh, sorry, here’s what we are going to do:

We [CSI members with some experience or penchant for teaching] will give a presentation/session of 1- 1-1/2 hour duration, with food served, about our specialty profession, our work, our service, our contribution, and our fit into construction projects, architecture and engineering efforts!

In addition, we will distribute handouts outlining our work products, our techniques, our formatting, our philosophy and explanatory information. We will show Project Manuals, and perhaps give out sample Sections.

It is a mini-short-course on specs, as not presorted in any other forum. [“At least, you’ll know there is such a thing as specifications, and a little about what they contain and what they do”]

The basic intent is to do what is not being done—getting information to the university level students about this vital, important and essential documentation.

Hence the Uninformed at the Universities [et. al.] will become
Uniformly, Up-graded, and provided Understanding!
