WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
by Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT

What does it take-- just to arouse a sleeping dog, a snoring spouse, OR a mild or larger outpouring and acknowledgement from any group [like CSI’s membership who really hold similar thoughts]? What does it take? Huh?

It’s easy to ignite a riot or a celebration, but we don’t need that. Similarly it is easy to convene a mandatory convocation or smaller group meetings dealing with issues or project [or many just like a baseball or football game]. But how do you energize the silent majority, to merely answer [without long narrative and explanation] a simple question and the belief in it or their support? Because it is small and simple DOES NOT deem it meaningless or unimportant! Perhaps it is just for “polling” to see if there an issue worth pursuing. In any event it is really necessary, as the simple answer could and may well allow a major new effort, direction or initiative to develop-- for the betterment of all! It is, though, necessary that EVERY voice be heard!!!

Membership is an activity and not simply some benign “thing”! Each member has more than one responsibility which can well benefit the organization-- the least is simply expressing your opinion. Groups can take action, for better service, etc., based on what they hear and what the members, collectively give voice to. To sit mum gained nothing for any players. Even if you are discouraged [for some or various reasons] expressing your dismay and even suggesting a solution can be of value to the organization. Often [too often??] it seems no one listens, but one must remember that each of our 13,000+ members has at least one opinion, and Lord knows how many ideas for changes and bettering.

The organization needs to be sensitive to, must allow and react to ideas, thoughts, solutions and pure opinion to become known. They don’t all necessarily work, but a great many do deserve the light of day-- exposure to member thoughts and voices. What does it take? How do you inspire a simple reply that really delivers so much to the situation in question?

Silence, disgust, anger, benign neglect, the lack of interest or the impetus to do it are no valid reasons to be a “shadow member” who just pays dues and merely stacks up THE SPECIFIER! CSI, like any organization needs input, reproach at times, new ideas, a consensus at times that is visible or loud [simply to express the collective reaction]. No barrier is valid that masks or shuts down communication-- member to organization. You Would think membership and payment of dues produces a certain status [a right?] to express good and bad, and certainly a poling voice to indicate what is in the minds of the members-- a VITAL exercise!
