HOW COME ?
BY Ralph Liebing, RA, CSI, CDT,
Cincinnati, OH

How come it appears that we, in the United States have wasted or frittered away 235 years? We have fought many wars to liberate others and protect our rights and freedom— wasted? In the natural course of things, of course, there will be changes. Our level of technology, our explorations, our perceived needs and other factors have caused us to change how we do things-- and impact a lot on how we do them.

We have come so far [?] when we build machines that are so productive and hollow of spirit that we are putting our work force in the unemployment lines. Also, we lose jobs to foreign lands because it’s cheaper and of course our prosperity has given us a higher standard of living. Where our workers may demand $20 an hour, foreign workers may do the same work for $20 a week or longer.

Maybe, gradually, and in our openness and friendly naivety we allowed our country to change, Changed to the point that WE have to become bi-lingual [of sorts] or tolerate pushing “1 for English”, etc. We now see foreigners at sports event where the U.S. is castigated, our players booed [sportsmanship?], and ceremonies performed in a foreign language-- in our stadiums! We see and hear about almost totally unfettered infiltration across our borders while our Border Patrol cannot drive through areas contain nearly extinct pup-fish! -- mis-placed priorities!

But in 1776, it was made know that we were a country of tolerance; open to those from others countries; and government in a new form [was it just an experiment?]. Today we see a gross aberration of those founding principles and we find our country in turmoil over far too many issues that need not be created-- IF we had followed the Founders. We changed over time, yes, but it was, I think, World War II that started the liberalized [not radical] attitude. Simple examples; men worn suits and ladies dresses, gloves and a hat to church [oh, yes church used to be an inviolable ritual!]; work clothes were collars and ties for men, and non-sporty attire for women [we now have to legitimize tielessness and prohibit flip-flops because the liberal minds always want to fill the gaps where nothing is said or some loop hole exists!]

I don’t think we lost anything-- we abdicated! Gave in; ignored; became ever more too-liberal and tolerant until what we had is now gone. When and how, for example, did music become merely unintelligible noise?

You’ll be busy this 4th of July, I am sure, having fun with family, and enjoying a mid-summer break—WONDERFUL! Good for you! But when you have a minute, give a thought to history even if your history of the U.S. was manipulated in your school texts and is slightly different from others. Use 1776 as “start” and think about what was then and what is now. Have we slowly lost our grip and been overly-gracious to the point of losing what we had and what is still legitimately ours—IF WE CHOOSE? Happy and safe 4th!
