We are working on a project overseas that is being designed to IBC 2006, with specifications based on MasterFormat 2004, although it will include a mix of European, British, and US products. One of these products is a fire curtain. This is a vertical coiling curtain, similar to a coiling fire shutter, except the curtain is a metal-reinforced glass fiber fabric instead of steel slats. What would be a reasonable section number under which to specify this? It's not a window treatment so the Division 12 "curtains" section wouldn't suit, nor would 104400 Fire Protection Specialties. I'm leaning toward a number within 083300 Coiling Doors and Grilles (although it really isn't a "door"). The closest similar number I can find is 083513.23 Foldinfg Fire Doors (like WonDor) although the product is vertically coling and not folding |

Dave, I mostly agree with your logic and agree that the fire curtain is protecting an "opening" and belongs in Division 08. However, since it is "coiling" and not "folding" I feel it fits better into 08 33 23. I don't think it is as important to get hung up on the fact that it's not a door for passage. Perhaps you could use the term "shutter" in lieu of "door." |

Dave, I would agree that 08 33 00 is the best choice. Maybe you can create a new Level 3 number and title: 08 33 43 "Overhead Coiling Fire Shutter." |

Or 08 33 29 Overhead Coiling Fire Shutter (keeping it with "overhead"). What about those overhead coiling shutters at elevator entrances? Where did they wind up? |

These special doors are smoke-containment or smoke-control doors. The one that comes to mind is Smoke Guard. They are overhead coiling but are not shutters in the strict sence. Perhaps 08 34 76 - SMOKE CONTROL DOOR ASSEMBLIES |
