Mineral wool thermal insulation from Thermafiber, Fibrex, Roxul, etc have excellent unfaced flame spread/smoke developed properties and are available faced with foil or poly-scrim-poly or poly-scrim-draft.

Please do not shoot the messenger.

I have a project using any of the above in the interior face of tilt-up precast. First 10-12 feet of insulaton will be foil faced, fastened between Z-furring and protected by gypsum board. Above 12 feet the insulation will be mechanically fastened but with the facing exposed to view.

My problem is, although the insulation has the required flame spread/smoked developed, the standard foil facings have not been tested for the same flame spread/smoked developed.

I am looking for a facing for the exposed locations that can be applied to the mineral wool by a 3rd party.

I hit a road block when I spoke to technical suupport at Roxul and have not had time to talk to Thermafiber and Fibrex.

Thanks

What are the requirements for purpose and function of the facing?

Wayne,

Thermafiber's standard foil facings have been tested to the ASTM E 84 standard for Flame Spread and Smoke Developed.

Flame Spread = 25
Smoke Developed = 0

You can contact me directly if you have any other technical questions about mineral wool products.

Austin, Hopefully you will check back in with this forum.

I have nothing against Thermafiber's products, including "Rainbarrier." However, I am looking at Thermafiber's datasheet for this product right now, which prominently states "Earn up to 20 LEED credits across 4 categories." This cannot be true. No one product by itself can contribute 20 credits, and your marketing people ought to be corrected. At best, it can contribute to a certain number of credits. The contribution of insulation is likely to be modest in any of the categories listed. The claim of contributions on four innovation credits is highly dubious and pretty unlikely.

The upshot is, for many specifiers, we are tired of the incessant greenwashing of many manufacturers when it comes to LEED, and I hope that Thermafiber will choose not to be one of them.

John,

Thank you for the feedback. We understand that no one product can earn 20 LEED credits. Our products contribute to the credits earned along with all the other materials in the building. Incorporating our insulation into a building can help you earn up to 20 credits.

See the link below for a detailed breakdown of the credits that our products contribute to. This document was published by NAIMA.
http://www.naima.org/pages/resources/library/pdf/N044.PDF

I have noted your comments and concerns in our literature revision file. We will review the LEED credit statement and modify or possibly remove it in future data sheet revisions.

Thanks again,
Austin Hess

regarding Thermafiber:
along with your silly "can contribute 20 credits" I note that you also have a toggle for "Green Building Professionals" as distinguished from architects, specifications writers and engineers.
trust me... if your "green building professional" isn't an architect, specification writer or engineer, why would they care about your product?
