What is the difference between the two organizations and their recommended door specifications? |

Not much. SDI does "standard" steel doors, and HMMA (part of NAAMM) does "custom steel doors". I have a one or two page sheet comparing SDI standard and HMMA custom specifications, and would be happy to email to you (or anyone else). geverding@cannondesign.com |

I ran into this odd fact recently. On steel door frames..... NAAMM calls out for an equal rabbet dimensions (1-15/16" both sides) SDI calls out for an unequal rabbet dimensions (1-9/16" and 1-15/16" door leaf side) I also believe that there are differences in allowed primers. |

So is that pulling a rabbet out of a hat, or what? |

The unequal rabbet dimension is so that the same frame can accomodate doors of both 1-3/4-inch and 1-3/8-inch thicknesses. SDI does have a standard for 1-3/8-inch thick steel doors. |

Is there any mention of resistance to water penetration in SDI (or HMMA for that matter)? Looking for something similar to that found in alum entrances storefront - there it is included in masterspec's performance requirements, along with field qc to test it, but there seems to be no similar text in hollow metal, or from what I can see in the standards either. |

The AAMA North American Fenestration Standard includes requirements for side-hinged doors, oriented principally to the pre-hung residential market, I think. However, (not having studied it recently) I suspect it could be applied to any type of side-hinged door assembly a manufacturer was willing to test. As to hollow metal doors and frames, it is interesting to note that many manufacturers can make a product that meets either standard. |
