Here's a vague question: An architect is asking me about fabric for use at Pool Cabanas and he thinks that there is a stricter requirement for Flame Spread/NFPA requirement than a standard Sunbrella-type fabric. So, the vague question is 2 part - anyone familiar w/ the standards for this kind of application, and, what type of fabric would meet the standard? |

For all fabric canopies on commercial and hospitality projects we have been specifying Sunbrella Firesist as our base spec. However Glen Raven recently replaced the Firesist line with their new Firesist HUV (Highly Ultra Violet) with enhanced features and performance. http://www.glenraven.com/index.php?lang=en&page=firesist |

J.Lazar is correct. Sunbrella Awning, Marine and/or Furniture Grade fabrics do NOT meet the flame spread testing. California State Fire Marshal requires that fabrics adhere to CPAI-84 which is the Tent Fabric Flammability Test. When the fabric is certified to meet CPAI-84, the material has been treated to prevent the spread of fire. Once the fire or flame is removed from the fabric, the fabric would stop burning (self-extinguishing). There are several fabrics which meet CPAI-84 codes. We, ResortCabanas.com, currently use Sunbrella Firesist HUV, Mainstreet or Pyrotone. There are other materials available which will meet the spec. |
