And the Chinese still think they're communists... :-)

It appears that magnesium fireproof board is a popular product in China. However, I'd be a little leery of products that promote themselves as meeting US Standards. For example, I checked out one manufacturer's website which stated they were ASTM and UL Certified...ASTM doesn't certify products or materials. Additionally, it stated they had ICC certificates available...ICC doesn't issue certificates, and ICC-ES doesn't even list an evaluation report for that one manufacturer's product.

I make allowances for that mistake, because the way I spell my name is the masculine form (think Lynn Dickey, Lynn Swann)

You should probably forward the e-mail to the Nigerian soul whose uncle, the former emperor, is being held in prison and needs help dispersing his lost millions.

Magnesium fireproofing? I remember that we held a flame to a small strip of magnesium in high school chemistry class and it burned brighter than the sun and faster than a firecracker fuse. Yeah, that was before "safety" was invented and common sense was still in its infancy.

That same chemistry teacher also demonstrated the reactivity of metallic sodium by dropping a sugar cube-sized piece into a bucket of water. Fortunately, we were out-of-doors but the ensuing explosion broke about twenty window panes in the court yard of the school.

Caveat emptor.

James - Thank you! I thought I remembered the same thing about magnesium (and metallic sodium, too, for that matter) but wasn't sure. Yet the web site cited above appears legitimate. It's an interesting read, too. When was the last time you used "glabrous" to describe a product?

It's certainly a different concept and doesn't appear to be in the same category as the email I got from Charles Taylor's second wife.

The material actually used is magnesium oxide, which has a very high melting point (2800 deg C). It is combined with fiberglass fibers, talc and other fillers to form a panel. Some products have passed ASTM E 84 for surface burning.

I just this morning found DragonBoard US in 4specs Gypsum Board section. It says it's MgO (magnesium oxide). Lots of tests. No address and no indication of where it is made on the web site but their Manu-Spec says

Their premise seems to be a relpacement for drywall sheathing, but with a single layer having the performance of a double layer of GWB. The product is much more money (their own figures), relying on the labor savings of a single layer to make it competitive.

I have concerns about quality control. China is still, apparently, a "wild west" (or east, I guess) capitalism. As recent news attests, there's very little regulation and highly varied quality control. I'm sure many products are fine, but maybe there's no way to be sure without testing every batch that arrives at the job site.
