WE usually specify schedule 40 or 80 hot dipped galvanized steel for bollards, however we have a client who wants aluminum bollards - this may be a dumb question, but has anyone specified aluminum bollards - do they hold up? What is the thickness of the tube walls? Anything else I should know in specifying them. |

Bollards used for vehicular protection are typically concrete filled. Are you sure you want to fill an aluminum tube/pipe with cement? |

Ron I don't, the problem is that the project is in Jamaica and galvanized steel does not hold up, stainless steel is too pricey for this application. Any suggestions?? |

I guess you could coat the inside with something to isolate the cement from the aluminum... I am told that even the thickness of a kynar coating is enough, but I would rather put my faith in 30 mils of bituminous paint. |

Actually the bituminous paint manufacturers only recommend 16 mils DFT in 2 coats, which we thought about using...our bigger concern was whether or not the aluminhum would take the external abuse? |

Thanks Nathan, that is a possibility worth considering, esp. since there is already alot of precast and cast stone in the job. |

Jerome, There are plastic slip covers available for bollards. I will be back to you ASAP. Precast concrete bollards are also available. What is the end use location of the bollards? Wayne |

Jerome, I found what I was looking for. Barco Products, 1-800-338-2697. 111 N. Batavia Ave., Batavia IL 60510 www.barcoproducts.com Barco furnishes thermoplastic post sleeves. You may have seen them at a fast food drive through and Wal*Mart. Available in not 1, not 2, but 3 colors. Yellow, red, and, my favorite, blue. They have a wide variety of parking lot products. I hope this helps? Wayne |

Wayne, thanks for taking the time to find this product, but its a bit cheesy for this project. The project is a resort in Jamaica (yes it is Jamaicaning crazy) where you and I may never be able to afford to stay one night, let alone a week...precast may be the best bet, thermoplastic no. Again thanks anyway, I will file this company's products as I may be able to use them in other future projects. |
