Now that Degussa has sold it's "construction chemicals" division to BASF, they seem to have disappeared completely, at least from the web. BASF does not yet have these materials on its site. (And I'm wondering if expansion joint system are considered a "chemical" by these companies.) It always seemed to me that Degussa's interest was in "financial synergies," not so much about making good construction products and servicing the market. That doesn't mean their products weren't good, but with the degree of churn in purchasing and selling companies and divisions, how can a company focus on the basics? Now that BASF has them... who knows. Is there anyone from the former Degussa who can really tell us what's happening? or should I just remove all Degussa products from our specifications until further notice? (In fairness, I suppose this criticism could be directed at a few other megalith corporations, too, that are growing by acquisition.)

WE specify many Degussa (formerly Chemrex) products, our local rep tells us that nothing much has changed, he now works for BASF and will provide the same service as he had with Degussa. I haven't spoken to the Watson Bowman rep yet, but from the website, it appears they are now BASF as well. These are all great products, I expect BASF will get their act together soon. I'll relay your concerns to these guys, perhaps one can post anonymously.

Good afternoon. Colin suggested I respond to the discussion because I am with BASF Building Systems and an active member of CSI. Sorry that the changes have made it difficult to contact us, maybe this e-mail will help. There are 4 distinct and separate businesses within the US that were purchased by BASF. They are;

BASF Building Systems - which is Sonneborn, Thoro, Hydrozo, ThoRoc, Master Builders Protection and Repair, Selby-Ucrete, Degadeck, and ChemRex (our OEM business). Our website is;www.basfbuildingsystems.com (it switches to ChemRex when processing).

BASF Admixtures - which is Master Builders Admixture business. Their website is under construction. You can contact them at www.masterbuilders.com until their new website is complete.

BASF Wall Systems - which is Senergy, Finestone, SonoWall. Their website is www.basfwallsystems.com

Watson Bowman Acme (their name is not changing as far as I know) - which is all the Wabo products. Their website is www.wbacorp.com.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, you can always contact me at marthe.brock@basf.com. Thank you.

Marthe,

Is there any problem with specifying products with the names you mentioned, such as Sonneborn, Thoro, Hydrozo, ThoRoc, Master Builders, Selby-Ucrete, Degadeck, ChemRex, Senergy, Finestone, SonoWall, and just not mention BASF or Degussa?

Ken,

Good to hear from you! There is no problem with specifying just brand name and product name. Contractors know where to get the products because we sell through large, local distribution.

On the other hand, we were bought by the largest chemical company in the world, we feel like we have gone as high as there is to go. BASF is a wonderful company; everyone within our organization is excited about the change.

Hope this helps.

Dear All:
To address the central thread of John Bunzick's precipitating posting, EMSEAL remains family-owned, and for 27 years has focused solely on providing lasting expansion joint solutions for your entire structure. This aspect of building design is not one that lends itself to commoditization the way patching materials, coatings, sealers, etc. do. Consequently we treat each project with appropriate consideration of situational requirements. We have developed several tools and a deployable design philosphy that is changing the way joint systems are designed, communicated in construction documents, fabricated and and installed. We would welcome the opportunity to thoroughly address your expansion joint needs. Our capabilities can be viewed at our website, www.emseal.com, or you may contact our tech team at techinfo@emseal.com or by calling 1-800-526-8365. Please feel free to call me directly as well. Kindest regards, Lester Hensley, President/CEO/Owner
