Today I came across a very disturbing find. Some of the cells in my Excel 2016 spreadsheet do not add when I sum the column. At first I thought maybe the cells were formatted as text instead of numbers. Then I though maybe the 1's were actually L's. I checked to see if the cells were somehow locked or hidden. It is very strange since the cells that don't add appear to be rather random. The only way to correct the problem was to delete all the numbers and re-enter the numbers in each cell. Has anyone come across this issue?

David,

Could you send me the offending spreadsheet?

Recalculation only occurs when saving. Did you try that?

Yes. I sent the file to Dewayne who figured there is some invisible character in front of the number. I have since redone the spreadsheet and will check my addition manually the next time I use the spreadsheet.

Thanks Dewayne for your help!

Invisible characters are a problem when you cut and paste from Word - I see this all the time working with html and do not understand the double space when one is not obvious until you look at the code.
