I admit I didn't read every one of them, but I didn't see anything that was so important it had to be read now as opposed to the next day - or the next month.
And if that super-critical, gotta-read-it-right-now-or-it's-the-end-of-the-world message was buried in all the chaff, how would I have known it was there? |

If you use Twitter, you'll find that it does not impose itself as to make you have to read anything now or later or ever. There are very simple controls from the cell phone that allow you to turn anything off or on. The point is that you CAN receive updates from friends about their activities during an event like this - or you CAN receive breaking news from CNN, or whatever interests you. No one forces you into doing anything, of course. And you can turn all of it off by sending off. You can read updates later from a computer. You can use it with only a computer and forget about receiving text messages. You can even skip creating an account and just use twitter search to find out if camping conditions might be good somewhere, or whatever interests you.
Or you can ignore it altogether and assume it is just a passing fad that is only for tech weirdos. |

Yep, I'm an old fart, but I do believe there is a good use for just about any technology. I'm just waiting for someone to explain why Facebook or Twitter will improve CSI, which seems to be what they are being promoted for.
Thus far, Twitter looks like just another Facebook, but without pictures. Both are used primarily for such earth-shaking observations as "I'm going to the convention" and "It's raining!" and "Just got puked on!" I do have a Facebook page, and I use it the way it is used - for non-essential communication, though only rarely.
Twitter itself does not pretend to be anything special; the interesting thing is that it claims to solve information overload! Incidentally, I do have a Twitter account, but I find other communication methods far more useful and informative. |
