Is anyone using Wiki's, intranets or databases to collect, organize and distribute design and construction information?

My office has recently created an in-house Knowledge Base that is driven by our Intranet. It seems to be working well. We track and publish policy items, guidelines, tips, URL's, and info articles on it. There are content managers for each department, and each item added has an expiracy date and it flags several people automatically who then review it and determine if it's still current and relevant.

Arup is the leader in this, but then again they have zillions of employees. ZGF just installed (a year ago or more) a system that provides the ability to do what you're talking about, but it was used inconsistently. Hillier Group also has inhouse intranet that provides information and resources for projects and employees.

We are building Sharepoint sites at this time. These will include job specific as well as information specific (code, specs, etc) pages as well. HOWEVER sharepoint's document manager will not work with AutoCad xrefs SO... we are using another document manager under sharepoint to deal with this.

Sharepoint 2007 doesn't either.

Ditto Anne's comment on ARUP

We don't have zillions where I work, but we do have thousands of employees in offices around the globe. We have engineers, scientists and other professionals in scores of disciplines. We occasionaly tackle projects that nobody else would have. Our success depends on being able to use the collective knowledge of our people.

We have an elaborate intranet for our employees based on a customized version of Lotus Notes. Because it is our portal for email and IM, everyone is connected throughout the day. It links to training, human resources, travel arrangements, shared informational resources, calendars and scheduling, and a daily e-zine of corporate news. We even have an online company store.

One of the features is user groups, or forums, for sharing information or making inquiries within particular interest areas.

With so many people on staff, we probably have someone who is a top expert on any given issue. The problem is finding the right one from among so many people scattered around the world.

By narrow-casting a question to the right forum, you can locate that one employee who has exactly the expertise you need.
