From major CAD, etc. guru Ralph Grabowski:

e-mail; Re: Discussing the Future of CAD
"What is the next 'big' thing for CAD? I don't know, but I know where it should be heading. Within the 3D world, the building model should be constructed exactly as the real thing.

"That is, the building would contain the exact number of bricks, metal studs, steel beams, nuts and bolts, as necessary for a complete project. There would be no need to create the gamut of details for a building: simply zoom into the area of concern and the details appear. Mouse-rollover reveals the components and dimensions.

"We can't be that far away now, can we?"
- Charles A. Graham, Jr.

The editor (Grabowski)replies: "Actually, yes. Parametric programs like Revit cannot handle excessive details, because those bog down the program's interrelated calculations.

"Some sort of substitution zoom might work. We have something like that in the latest releases of MCAD software, where only 3D image of the assembly is loaded to improve the loading speed. Part data are not loaded until they need to be edited."
