This was posted on a building code discussion group I participate in, but I didn't have an answer for the poster. So, I though maybe somebody here might have the information he's looking for... I can recall reading an article some time ago concerning manufacturing standards for kitchen counter tops, it stated that the standards for kitchen counter tops were to be changed some time in the near future, this change was to eliminate the use of wood material from the counter top manufacturing process such as post form laminate. I am fairly certain of what I read but I did not print this information for my personal records, nor do I remember the source from which it came from. Is this true and if so, who would be inforcing it? I have been searching the internet endlessly to find associated articles and have not found such. Please help. Thank you. |

Ron, I am not sure if this gets to your issue or not, but there is some concern over the level of emitted formalydehyde from certain wood products [other engineered products reduce this concern]. Check MasterSpec in Evaluations for Div. 12 for countertops under Manufactured Wood Casework 123200]. Also, There was concern over the contamination of wood block tops if they are not sealed and cleaned properly. |

Ralph: I'm still in Kuwait, so I don't have access to my MasterSpec evaluations. However, I have one week and a night left here, then I'm back to sunny southern Cal for a week and a half to finish my tour of duty before heading to the Show & Convention in Las Vegas (I thought I'd never make it back in time...then again, this is the military and I haven't actually left...yet). Will you be there? |

If you could post it on the BCDG, that would be great. It's approaching beddy-bye time here, so I'd like to get some shut-eye time here shortly. As for war stories, an exploding diet coke can is about as close as I can offer (it was extremely funny, though). I was closer to getting shot at Ft. Carson, CO, during weapons training than I ever was here in this huge sand trap. |
