Industrial project in Florida, and hardware rep is saying we should use stainless steel hinges on a galvanized door, in a hollow metal frame. Is he coming from a "Florida" construction perspective, or are we missing something else? Can understand SS hinges in a SS door and frame, but the note above has us stumped. And a more general question, do you spec SS hinges on doors in rooms that have severe wash-down operations-- again with any and all types of doors and frames? Thanks for your insight. |

I work for a HM door & frame manufacturer. It's common practice to use stainelss steel hinges on a "regular" HM door & frame, for exterior use. If the door & frame are going to be properly maintained (periodically painted), then there should be no problem for a standard application. Our standard steel for our doors & frames is A40 galvanized; superior to CRS (Cold-Rolled Steel can rust from the the inside-out). We also offer G90 galvanized and stainless steel as optional material. On G90 & stainless steel, only use stainless steel hinges. But for you application, it sounds like you should be using stainless steel hinges. But I would question even more so about the steel of the door...verify the "type of galvanized" it is. If it's A40, A60 or G90, then you're ok...but they must be painted. The use of a stainless steel door & frame or (solid) fiberglass door & frame with only stainess steel hardware would be your best alternative. Good luck, Steve Talanian Metropolitan Door Industries stalanian@metropolitandoor.com |

I agree. Stainless hinges always on exterior doors, or those in wet areas. |

as an option, you can use marine bronze on exterior doors -- and we often use G90 or A120 for galvanized exterior doors on the seacoast and they hold up just fine in our marine climate. I |
