Have a project where we need to specify extensive demolition of existing horizontal structural elements on multiple levels, while retaining the existing vertical structure and foundations - would we be better off using section 01732- Selective Demolition or Section 02220 - Building Demolition? |

I'd use selective demolition; we just use the building demolition section for demo of entire building, not portions. Make sure that the contractor is responsible for temporary bracing and shoring to maintain the structural integrity of structure to remain. |

I agree with Dave on using selective demolition. I've used it in a Division 2 Section, too, when elements of a building will be demolished completely prior to the start of construction. In your case, though, it seems like you will need to leave the shoring and bracing there for at least part of the construction. Putting it in Division 1 makes more sense in this case, as it will apply to and cover the entirety of the Work. |

Jerome, I second Dave's response - I reserve building demolition for complete demolition. |

MasterFormat 2004 includes a section in the new Divison 02 Existing Conditions; 02 41 19 - Selective Structural Demolition Might not help if you are using the 95 version but I would modify the Selective Demolition section to suit the project. |
