I want to know how my pals out in 4specs land feel about this manufacturer! I had a run in with someone there today that is making me bite through my key tray at my workstation! : ) |

As Emo Phillips said, "Some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps." |

Melissa Please don't lump everyone that may be related to a certain manufacturer, architect, engineer into a single group, just because they happen to get pay checks from the same place. We have certainly all been guilty of making the "wrong" response at the wrong time. You obviously had a bad experience and for that I'm sorry, because it is enough to want to make you eat your key tray. We would all like to say we make the right statement at the right time, but take a deep breath and back away from your key tray - it didn't do anything wrong. |

We specify a lot of the products that Jeld-Wen makes, and I have spoken to a number of people at Jeld Wen over the last couple of years. As many may know, Jeld-Wen has bought up a large number of manufacturers of doors and windows over the past few years. Part of their strategy is to re-brand everything to the Jeld-Wen name. Surrprisingly to me, this means that in some cases very well known brand names have suddenly ceased to exist. Morgan Doors, for example, is a well respected name in New England, but they no longer use the name, nor do they even explain on their web site that they have rebranded them. It just seems like they went out of business. They also think they are doing better in serving the architectural community, or at least they state that this is their intent. However, they seem very distracted by their greater marketing efforts towards the consumer, or something. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that they will end up being just another big-box DYI brand that architects will not be able to effectively specify. (Sounds a bit like the Levelor thread). In another case, Jeld-Wen has purchased a manufacturer of windows in the San Diego area. This manufacturer was just about to produce a new product that we desperately need in our practice area. But since this manufacturer needed to fully integrate Jeld-Wen's production control system into their operation, the introduction of this product has been delayed by a year or more. So, I'm not too thrilled myself with what's going on with Jeld-Wen. I'll wait to see what the next year brings. |
