The BTEP Feasibility Task Team has concluded its assigned tasks and submitted a report to the CSI Board including the following recommendation: "CSI should create a Building Technology Education Program (BTEP) Development Task Team with members from various design, construct, and owner disciplines to create an education program based on the findings of the BTEP Feasibility Task Team."

You may read the BTEP Report to the Board on the CSI Website: http://www.csinet.org/Main-Menu-Category/Communities-2109-14280/CSI-Biz/2012-Annual-Meeting.

Brilliant! What a great boost this would be to the industry. Where do we sign up?

well, this sounds like a complete boondoggle. Considering that I have never met a client who knew what a CCS was, much less knew why they wanted one on a project, I can certainly see how CSI will totally be able to sell its credibility regarding the entire construction market.

CSI needs to create the market for its primary certification before they spend time and money developing something else. When I see owners requesting a CCS on their jobs as many times as they ask about LEED APs, then CSI will have done their job.

Actually this sounds like a great way to bring CSI the credibility it deserves by using the means that many of our members are very qualified to bring to the table.

To pigeonhole CSI into just being about formats, we limit ourselves to being viewed in that way. I believe expanding this Task Team could provide us with means to approach the many industry associations that have already caught on to a point but that are still not sufficiently on the architectural community's radar such as BETEC, RCI, AWCI and so many others. We can give each other the additional validity to push technical knowledge to the forefront and take our industry to the next level. Many Emerging Professionals are begging for this exposure but don't know where to find it. How wonderful if they will be able to access this knowledge base just by becoming involved in their local CSI Chapter and Region.

Out of curiosity, I googled "building technology education" and found a Building Technology Educators' Society that was incorporated in 2008.

The resources tab has lists of publications on the various aspects and elements of building technology.

I was surprised that none of its officers seem to have any overt connection with CSI nor is there any acknowledgment of CSI as being an educational resource. It seems both CSI and this group could attain great mutual benefit by collaborating and sharing knowledge.

David:

Thank you for finding this. As the Board liaison to the BTEPTT, I will see if we can get some communication going between CSI and BTES.

Great!

Inasmuch as the BTES is composed primarily of high-level architectural and engineering educators, a connection might help realize a key CSI outreach goal.

Since I'm a core faculty member of Taliesin, The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, I just joined the organization.

It seems this organization has existed since 1996, based on the dates of their past conferences. I don't see how the two organizations--CSI and BTES--have not crossed paths over the past 17 years.

Hopefully, that will change. I plan to become the CSI liaison to this organization with the hope of getting CSI more integrated into school curricula.

Ron,

Good luck. You have the credentials and professional demeanor to make that happen.

Actually, considering they've only met about 10 times in the past 15 years, it's not terribly surprising that this hasn't been on CSI's radar.

This sounds like a great way to make inroads into one of the areas that has been heavily discussed amongst our peers; influencing curricula at architectural schools. If the Task Team can establish a list of qualified professionals who can serve the industry as part of the CSI Speakers Bureau, BTES may have a readily available resource for guest lecturers.

David, this was a great catch on your part. Best of luck Ron. Reach out if appropriate. We're here for you!

On hold until CSI works through a major transition with its new executive director and after a new education coordinator/director is hired.
