California does not allow the use of lead flashing in public schools. It was suggested by one roofing manufacturer to use zinc flashing instead I seem to remember seeing something recently about zinc being a problem too, but I couldn't find the thread Does anyone have any suggestions on zinc flashing? |

I usually encounter zinc flashing only in association w/ zinc cladding or roofing. I understand that the material is considerably more expensive than alternative solderable metals, and there are special detailing concerns because of the need to maintain air circulation behind some zinc products. Although I haven't read it yet, the Feb issue of The Construction Specifier has an article that discusses corrosion issues for zinc cladding. My clients typically select stainless steel or TCS II as alternatives to lead flashing. Copper or ZT alloy-coated copper are also sometimes used if appropriate for the project. |
