Seriously. We are having a problem with birds pecking holes in a neoprene rubber compression seal in a brick wall. They seems to only be pceking at the seal on the south side of the building. Anybody heard of this behavior before?

My guess is that the new neoprene off gasses and emits an attractive odor.

Does anybody know how to stop the birds from destroying the seal?

Thanks.

Cover the neoprene! When I was at Wells Fargo Bank, VP Facilities, we had a big problem. Our southern California data center was built of prefabricated fiber reinforced concrete panels, installed with about a 1 inch joint between panels. The sealant, I don't know what kind, went up the wall, across the parapet and down the back side to the roof flashing. We had tall pine trees, which I relocated to save because they were so beautiful, and crows loved the trees. They also loved the sealant, and when they got to the backing rod beneath the sealant, it was their dessert. We replaced the sealant, I think with some type of acid curing silicone, but shortly after that I left, so I am not sure how it survived in the long range. The building is still there, and the crows were considered a minor problem compared to the idiots who shot bullets through the glass windows into the computer equipment, from the adjoining freeway.

An interesting sidelight to this conversation (may have absolutely no bearing on this issue): Several years ago I became aware of a similar problem with birds poking holes in an elastomeric roof covering over a sprayed urethane insulation system. It turned out that the birds weren't actually after the coating or the urethane, but where eating insects! Something about the urethane attracted little bugs and that's what the birds were really after.
