I am trying to specify tubular skylights in corridors for an educational building. I would like the tubular skylights to blend into a conventional suspended grid (2 ft x 4 ft)when viewed from the interior. So I would like the diffuser to be 2 ft x 2 ft. and flat (no interior dome projecting)and look commericially pleasing. Solatube product is a great basis, but for public bidding I need some good product equals to it. Any suggestions? |

Look under the 4specs website, Section 08625. There are many manufacturers listed. |

I read the current posts (Mark and Dave) to my original inquiry about tubular skylights. I went to all the websites listed at 4specs under Section 08625. I also called Solatube. Finding an equal to Solatube is difficult. |

Hi John: Your original post asked about equals to Solatube. It's nice to hear that others like the company, but it doesn't answer your question. Unfortunately, we have not specified tubular skylights so I am not familiar with the Solatube or who might be considered an equivalent product. I am familiar, however, with working on public projects and understand the problem you have with coming up with two "equal" products to the one you want, especially when you don't consider the others to necessarily be equal. If you haven't done so already, I would suggest that you make a list identifying the critical requirements for your project and see which of the other manufacturers listed on 4specs Section 08625 come closest to matching your criteria. It helps to have a checklist so you can compare features and document differences. If you have a Solatube representative that you have worked with in the past (and feel that they give you good information), you can always ask them who they consider to be GOOD competition. A university that we worked with a while back wanted only one manufacturer's casework system. They "got around" the multiple manufacturer clause by bidding it as an alternate to a more conventional system and then accepted the alternate. |

The current issue of Professional Roofing (June, 2004) on page 31, highlights tubular skylights. The brief article mentions Velux-America of Greenwood SC; ODL, Inc., of Zeeland MI; and Spyder Skylight by Sun-Tek Manufacturing Inc., of Orlando FL. |
