For Trash Chutes in Residential Bldgs. we have specified 3" fiberglass wrapped around chute that has been coated with a sound deadening compound, i.e.Daubert 932. With the recent mold scare, the fiberglass may not be an appropriate material to wrap the chute. Does anyone have any comments, we are looking to delete the fiberglass and request a heavier coat of the sound deadening compound. Also does anyone have a cut sheet on the Daubert 932, seems like it is not avail. on their website.

Jerome,

Let me know what you find out.

We had an owner request that we wrap a trash chute with 3 inches of fiberglass insulation.

However, there is not 3 inches of space in the current design, but on the dwelling sides the enclosure includes the rated wall, and in addition an STC rated wall construction which is probably better than the 3 inches.

But in looking into this, I happened to glance through a binder from US Chutes that had a good amount of acoustic information in the form of testing reports. In short, the insulation provides almost no sound deadening to the kind of noise generated (like bottles tumbling down the chute), and they talked about 2 coatings, a black coating and a white coating.

But the did not go into any detail about what they were, other than that they are very thin, and that they deal with the sound much more effectively. I think its proprietary to them, rather than a 3rd party applied product.

I have not had much more chance to look into this, so I don't know what others offer as chute manufacturer's, or if some of them rely on the architect finding a separate product to apply to it.

William, I contacted a sound consultant regarding trash chute noise and received an informative response. Email your fax number to me and I will fax a copy. Basically he advised that a better product for coating the chute was V-Damp 3680 also manuf. by Daubert Chemical, applied at a thickness equal to the thickness of the chute. He agreed with the insulation, but provided both a specific manufacturer and product and some guidance on noise issues with trash chutes.
