Another nail in the MasterFormat coffin.

Where do you all specify structural glass railings?

Is it in Division 8 with the appropriate title of DOORS & WINDOWS, or Division 5 with the appropriate title of METALS, or elsewhere?

Gerald,

I would specify structural glass railings in 05720 - Handrails and Railings.

Gerard:

I agree--we specify tempered glass railings in the 05700 series sections--whether a manufactured system such as by Blumcraft, or a custom system. Never had a problem with this location.

As a follow-up, Gerard, and obviously your point in "another nail in MasterFormat coffin"--I see no problem in glass railings being specified in a Division 5 section on railings, since railings are a "work result".

The anomoly, in my opinion, comes in the inconsistent labeling of Division titles, in particular for Divisions 3, 4, 5, and 6. The other division titles could be considered "work results", but these Division titles are materials, and we have been told, ad infinitum, that MasterFormat is not a materials-based classification system. And after 40 years of use, with untold thousands of buildings being successfully constructed and with no lasting ill effects from these division names being materials, I see no need to change the names of these 4 divisions.

According to my trusty ol' 1995 MasterFormat, Section 05520 - Handrails and Railings includes "Tempered Glass Railing Assemblies."

Personally, I specify "glass-supported railings" in Section 05720 - Ornamental Metal Railings. I think the metal components are finely finished products compared to the more utilitarian railings that I typically specify in Section 05525 - Steel Pipe and Tube Railings. The glass merely (?) supports the metal railing. And there are ornamental railing systems where the glass is an infill material between the posts, just as the infill could be wire mesh product.

This is a good example of the need to work on assignment of products to various Section numbers and titles in Divisions 3 through 14, if we can get past the major revisions in MasterFormat.

Thank you all for the answers. I agree that the only logical location, at this time, is in 05520. It still does not feel right and the reason are the titles of Div 3,4 5, and 6, as Dave Metzger so eloquently states.

Thanks also to John Regener. It's time that we all get on board on the MasterFormat revisions.

Notably, Masterspec uses 05720 (and now 05721) for glass railing assemblies as well. This is the section I have always used, and I agree with John Regener's assessment. Interesting that here's a case where perhaps the entire industry has made a de facto change to MasterFormat.

(Note to Dennis Hall: here's another MF revision suggestion!)
