Does anyone have any sample spec sections they would be willing to share on removing asphalt shingles (what section number is this typically specified in?). Also, does anyone have sample specs for furnishing and installing asphalt shingles. Once the shingles are removed, the deck may need to be repaired. This work is in southern California. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

This would most likely be located in a "Selective Demolition" Section, usually numbered 0173X.

MasterSpec has a Section 01732 "Selective Demolition" but doesn't directly address asphalt shingles, just roofing in general.

MasterSpec does have a Section 07311 "Asphalt Shingles" which could be used.

If you don't subscribe to MasterSpec, you can pay for and download individual Sections from their website.

New MasterFormat has a Section 07 01 50.23 called Roof Renoval, and others about restoration, re-coating, etc.
Our office has old number Sections, 07590 and 07591 for Roof Removal and Roof Repair, respectively, but for non-shingle roofing mainly [could be adapted as necessary]. We get into a lot of renovations and additions, so both are used quite often. Will share, but they may need massaging for your use.

I have specified roof demolition within the related roofing section as well, since it could be considered part of "preparation". This may be more important if the expectation is that the roof will be demolished in phases, along with the application of the new shingles. Putting it in the roofing section makes that easier to specify and, almost certainly, the roof will be demolished by the roofing contractor. Here in New England--where the typical roof sheathing is likely to be 7/8 inch thick boards (often startlingly wide, I might add) over 100 years old--one common practice is to put 3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood down over the entire roof. The existing sheathing may have large gaps between boards and may be a bit soft, and this takes care of that. Rotten boards would be pulled up and replaced.

Why would selective demolition be considered a "general requirements" matter and specified in Division 1?

I agree with the idea that removal of the existing roofing is part of preparation specified in the roofing section.

Don't ask me, ask the MF1995 Task Team.

However, the MF2004 Task Team (they don't want it referred to as "MF04" anymore) wised up and placed "Selective Structure Demolition" (Section 02 41 19) in Division 02 - Existing Conditions, where it really belongs.

Shouldn't it be the MF20 04 Task team?

Please forgive this dummy for polluting this site, but the new CSI format has Selective Building Demolition as 02 41 19, if one wanted to use the "demo" route for roof removal. However, since it also has 07 01 50.23 specifically for roof removal, why are we not looking to use that? I am not questioning all you folks who are far better at this than I am, but just simply wondering...... Thanks for your help.

I guess it depends on the scope of demolition. If it's only roofing, as in this case, then the MF2004 Division 7 Section appears to be appropriate. However, if extensive remodeling is planned, where several building components are being demolished, then the MF2004 Division 2 Section would probably be the better choice.

In MF1995, there was no specific guidance for individual demolition sections for each of the Divisions, but you could probably insert it below Level 2 of 07300 "Shingles, Roof Tiles, and Roof Coverings," and number and title it as Section 07301 "Asphalt Shingle Removal" for example.
