the EPD form is proposed as a credit in the upcoming LEED v4. Has anyone requested EPDs on their jobs and gotten them? What about HPD forms?

My guess is that you'll be hard pressed to find many manufacturers who actually have EPDs or HPDs available. Certainly more now than a year ago, but they're scrambling to get them done.

UL set up a database of products they've tested:
http://www.ul.com/global/eng/pages/offerings/businesses/environment/databasesearch/iframe/

The international community may be a bit further along. See http://www.environmentalproductdeclarations.com/

I know there have been numerous others who claim to be doing EPD/HPD testing but UL is the only one I can find that has an openly accessible database for the products already tested.

I had initiated a database of EPDs based on the criteria in Pilot Credit 43. The information was included as defaults where applicable. Now that more manufacturers have adopted EPDs its possible to use them in bid scenarios such as acoustical ceiling tile or carpet. We also used them to identify CO2 kg equivalents for the 2030 Chalenge for Products. I'd be glad to share resources for anyone interested.

I meant to add that I drafted a Division 01 section for HPDs but they are awfully close to MSDS which we removed as submittals many years ago. I appreciate there may be a benefit for a LEED point here and there but I'm not sure many clients might buy into the concept.

I just looked at the database Ken suggested; there are 74 certificates. The top 4 companies with the most listings are Interface (21 listings), Tandus, Bentley Prince Street, and Certainteed. These account for more than 50 percent of the listed certificates. Also included are certificates for flat panel display monitors and laser printers.

I hope the scramble has begun, 'cause this ain't gonna cut it when LEED 4 really starts to hit the street next fall.

You don't necessarily need to soley reference EPDs. The NRMCA Life Cycle Assessment of Concrete Buildings ISO 14040/14044. PIMA has published a Life Cycle Assessment of Polyiso Insulation ISO 14040/14044.
The Treated Wood Council published a Life Cycle Assessment of Treated Wood per ISO 14040/14044.
Centria has published a LCA per ISO 14040/14044 for its Formawall product. Other than the resources found on the ICC or UL Environment websites take a look at The Green Standard that has published two SolarGard EPDs. Kone has published EPDs for many of its elevator models. In most cases it's likely EPDs or LCAs just need to be referenced in QA or References in Part One.

OK, how about now - 10 months and one implementation later - anyone requested EPDs or HPDs? How have you done so? Typical LEED submittal in the technical sections and in a Division 01 Section? OR?

(Inquiring minds want to know)

Yes, HPDs - defined in Division 01, and requested in Part 1 under Environmental Information Submittals (I don't restrict that Article to LEED). This was done for a project that is going for LEED Platinum and the Living Building Challenge (which has a Red List - thus the need for info on chemicals).

I'm anxious to see how it plays out in Construction Administration.

I wrote a specification for a client pursuing LEED v4 M&R credits and basically copied the LEED requirements for these credits. It was a total nightmare. Many of the requirements are not in the credit language, but found in a still-in-progress resource guide.

The project has been built, but we got almost NOTHING for these credits from the Contractor, which is no surprise at all, since we informed the client multiple times along the way that we can ask... but the truth is that this stuff (HPDs and EPDs specifically) just simply does not exist in enough volume across enough product categories.

So, while the spec was written correctly, very few products exist that comply, and the Contractor can't be expected or held to changing the world and how it works just because a client throws a tantrum about wanting it.

you can't push a string. research compliance of products during design. choose product CATEGORIES that inherently comply and you will find more data. where no compliant product exists that meet the performance needs, the rating systems allow for that.

Jumping on the bandwagon in a huge way! We're requiring that all products either be gluten-free or formulated of homeopathic dilutions of 200C or greater.
