I received a request to research vertical blinds made from wood (or some other rapidly renewable material). As far as I can tell, vertical blinds are available in PVC and aluminum. Horizontal blinds are available in those, plus wood. Has anyone come across a creative sustainable solution?

Old bed sheets. Reused, better than recycled.

Thanks for the input. It turns out that Hunter-Douglas offers wood vertical blinds after all. Thank goodness for Google.

From an energy perspective, heavy curtains would offer a better insulating value than blinds...

Joel,

That's true, but I think vertical blinds give you better control over light. The subject came up becuase of the desire to reduce the amount of vinyl products in the project. I'm not sure how well curtains would hold up in our campus buildings.

Jim,

Have you considered wood shutters? Victoria is our local rep for Danmer Custom Shutters. Danmer also presents at our CSI Product Shows and promote being environmentally responsible.
They are located in So. Cal if place of manufacturing is important.

Aluminum is highly recyclable, and long lasting. I would consider it sustainable.
