Hello, friends. Can anyone suggest an optimum section number for smoke baffles at stairwells? Thank you.

Since these can be fabricated from a variety of materials (although glass is probably the most common form), using one of the material sections may not be suitable.

I suggest using Division 10 "Specialties" and more specifically Section 10 40 00 "Safety Specialties" for a broad-scope Level 2 number. If you want to be more specific, then maybe creating a new narrow-scope Level 2 number might work, such as 10 46 00 "Smoke Baffles."

I have always spec'd these in the Glazing section. They're glazier's work, w/ glass panels the primary component (usually 1/2" clear tempered) and metal channels & butt-glazing sealant spec'd as auxiliary materials.

I have always used Section 07 8700 - Smoke Containment Barriers.

MasterFormat describes this section thusly:

Includes: draftstopping panels suspended from ceiling or placed in plenum cavities to prevent or to inhibit the spread of smoke.
