Here in Florida if your building is adjacent to the ocean you must meet requirements for protection of the Marine Turtle and their nesting. There are requirements that the GC must meet during construction and requirements the Consultants must meet for the life of the building, specifying turtle friendly lighting. Hatchlings are naturally attracted to the brightest portion of the beach. My question pertains to which spec section to specify these products. Lighting is specified in Division 16 or 26, a no brainer. But there are other products that may be required and guidelines to consider regarding parking, vehicular control, and operations, In the past I have included these in Division 1, Section Series 01500 or 015000 ,this works for the temporary controls, but how about the permanent requirements. There are references to marine turtle protection throut Division 1, under meetings, and coordination. I would like to hear how my fellow specifiers handle this in their seashore projects.

Good morning, Jerome. Several years ago, I wrote specifications for a Florida veterinary clinic that overlooked an inlet on a turtle migration path. The two components that were most critical were exterior lighting and glazing. Glazing had to be tinted in a special way to prevent the disruptions you noted in your post. I used Section 01 35 13 Special Project Procedures to identify the overarching requirements related to this challenge and the Division 08 and 26 sections for the more specific criteria. Luckily, the project went well. Perhaps an even more appropriate location for expressing these special circumstances would be under 01 80 00 Performance Requirements or even in Division 02 Existing Conditions. I hope your inquiry leads to some good ideas.
