I am doing more and more projects that are General Contractor / Construction Manager method of delivery. The GC/CM is asking for a few separate bid packages. In one of the bid packages will contain all the structural elements (concrete and steel) and a few miscellaneous items such as foundation insulation and Geofoam. I am breaking up the insulation section into two sections "Below-Grade Insulation" and "Above Grade Insulation". What MasterFormat numbers I should use? David G. Adding a couple digits would work (072100.13 and 072100.16). If, like me, you avoid 8-digit section numbers, something like 072101 and 072102 could be used. Jeffrey Wilson CCS CSI SCIP Wilson Consulting Inc Ardmore PA |

MasterFormat, years ago, eliminated location as a criterion for numbers and titles. Titles assigned to level three numbers, in this level two group, relate to product types. This allows sections written for them to be specific about the product type and its installation for as many applications as are appropriate for that product type. There are seven level three numbers under 072100 that can be used, plus there are gaps in the numbers that can be used if the assigned numbers and titles don't suit you. All this without going to 8 digits. |

The CSI/CSC practice guide for fast-track projects with multiple work packages advocates dividing spec sections to minimize the need for extensive revisions, such as exterior and interior glazing and sealant sections. |

Louis, I didn't find that to be the case in the CSI Construction Specifications Practice Guide (CSPG). It mentions it as a possibility in preparing the project manual, yes, but I wouldn't agree that it "advocates" for dividing the spec sections. In fact, it also proposes the opposite as a contrast: "However, some construction managers may prefer to use the same product section for all bid packages and use Section 011200 - Multiple Contract Summary specification section to describe the scope of what is included in a particular bid package" (Pg. 28, CSI CSPG). The answer to David's original question may simply be, what does the CM want to do? David, I'd encourage a review of 1.14 of the CSPG. Depending on what they want, it could greatly increase the amount of coordination and work you end up doing. I hope you've accounted for that in your fee. |

I have had similar experiences to the one that David describes. So even though normally I would never split the insulation section into "below grade" and "above grade" (or whatever terms may be appropriate for the project), I have done this so a foundation package could be issued. In some cases, we may not even had made the selections for above grade insulation when the foundation package was issued. I don't remember what section numbers I used, but I stuck with 6 digits, I think incrementing one of the section numbers by one. I think the approach David is using is a good one for the situation. |

The CSI/CSC practice guide I was referring to is titled "Multiple Work Projects" CSI product code MWP2014. The subtitle is "Producing and Issuing Contract Documents in Partial Sets for Fast-Track Construction." |
