I guess I haven't been paying enough attention to the changes to MasterFormat over the years and now that I am looking at the 2016 Masonry Division and many of the titles appear foreign to me or are located in weird places.
What is "Period Masonry" (04 03 00)? I suppose they used that term instead of Historic, but that is not a recognized term used in the masonry industry.
Autoclaved Aerated Masonry (04 22 26) is not concrete masonry and should be in a separate section.
Masonry Veneer (04 26 13) is not really considered single wythe masonry even though it is only one wythe thick.
Where does Manufactured Stone Veneer fit in? I suppose 04 73 00, but the only listing under that section is Calcium Silicate units.
Are these dramatic changes that I will have a hard time convincing the MasterFormat change task team, or are they changes that need to be done? |

Submit a revision proposal with your justification. The MasterFormat Maintenance Task Team has been open to convincing arguments, accepting over 60% of the changes I propose.

What is of concern to me is way the team wouldn't have consulted BIA or other masonry related associations from the very beginning.
It leaves the question as to what other materials/products associations were not consulted.

Michael is right. Correspond with the committee. You really will not know how information was gathered unless you correspond with the team directly. Better than that, get involved in the process going forward. The door is always open for those who want to work for change.
MasterFormat is a standard developed by volunteers. We all know how hard it is to get accurate information. Even when you do, it is rare when the information satisfies everybody. |

Yes, my next step is to talk with the MasterFormat team to see if I can make some recommendations. It just seemed like years ago (1995), the masonry section made sense... but now it doesn't - or at least parts of it. |
