First off, I know that the MasterFormat 2014 keyword index lists it off nicely: 08 74 00 - door; card key locking hardware 08 74 13 - door; electrical locking systems 08 74 00 - door; electro-mechanical hardware 08 74 00 - door; electromagnetic holders So I'm convinced that Electric Strikes, Electromagnetic Locks (Maglocks), Door Hold Opens, REXs, and Electric Hinges should be spec'd in Division 08, and not in Division 28. Heck, Card Readers and Keypads too. Of the above list, all are related to access control and intrusion detection. Maglocks also relate the fire alarm, and of the list above, door hold opens only relate to fire alarm. What I'm looking for is a persuasive argument to help justify to others that this is the right way, because it makes sense. Any help or suggestions? |

If the door or frame needs to be (factory-)prep'd to receive the device, the device should be specified in Division 08. I've also occasionally had this argument about position switches. It's too easy for the door and frame manufacturer to miss a device if it's not explicitly included in the hardware schedule. And for fire-rated door/ frame assemblies, cutting or drilling in the field to accept the device will violate the rating. The only times I've included card readers and keypads in Division 08 is if they are standalone, ie not connected to a central access control system. Otherwise I leave card readers and keypads to be specified in Division 2.8 |
