Our office has recently taken a fancy to incorporating barn doors into interiors projects. Typically I'm seeing large panels with wheels running on an overhead track mounted to an adjacent wall. Should these be specified as an assembly in 08 1473 "Sliding Wood Doors" or 08 3200 "Sliding Glass Doors" or would it be more appropriate to address this as a hardware item? |

The one time I had barn doors on a project, the doors themselves were custom fabrications, which I specified in "Interior Architectural Woodwork." I put the barn door hardware in the "Door Hardware" section. |

I'm sometimes asked to include barn door hardware in a hardware set. Usually this is with a wood door panel fabricated similar to or the same as a Flush Wood door (or a custom fabrication as Liz mentioned above). Glass barn door hardware (see C. R. Laurence, and others) is usually a separate item specified with sliding glass doors. George A. Everding AIA CSI CCS CCCA Allegion PLC (formerly Ingersoll Rand) St. Louis, MO |

It often depends on if you are using an independent resource such as a hardware consultant to prepare your 08 71 XX Hardware Specification and if they are inclined to specify and include the sliding door hardware in their groups. We usually include the sliding door hardware within the sliding door spec Section. The sliding door hardware is not specified in the 08 71 XX Section but it is noted in the sequential group listings with a cross reference to the sliding door spec Section. There often is no cross-over between the swing door hardware manufacturers listed versus the barn or sliding door hardware manufacturers like Crown Industrial or Hafele, (Though a common parent multi-national may be lurking behind them all) so this never has been an issue. |

One thing that has come to my attention recently on a hotel project where the designer wanted barn door hardware , which I was not a party to - when the hardware supplier came back and started asking questions then I was brought in to fix it. All barn door hardware is not created equal. I prefer to have the barn door hardware in the door hardware section. |

Not to hijack the subject, but I just want to mention that, from a code standpoint, a barn door cannot be used as a means of egress door unless the occupant load is 10 or less--other code-compliant doors are required. Ron Geren, FCSI, AIA, CCS, CCCA, SCIP www.specsandcodes.com |

Depends on the circumstances: I have spec'd hardware for custom architectural woodwork sliding doors in the Div 06 woodwork section; custom & manufactured sliding door assemblies in separate Div 08 sections (including panels & hardware); and barn door hardware applied to standard flush wood doors in the Door Hardware section. |
