I'm just asking for an opinion here, since I've already written the section using this number: 119600 Animal Handling Equipment. I currently have a zoo designing client, and much like when I've done clinics or labs, there are a few pieces of miscellaneous equipment that are part of the job. The contractor mostly has to just purchase the items, and coordinate locations and service attachments (if any). in this case, I'm specifying an animal scale, an animal sling (to pull sea lions out of the water); a couple of things like that.

Anne:

See MF04 13 19 00 Kennels and Animal Shelters. Related Section 11 70 00 is listed for "animal healthcare equipment." But 11 70 00 Healthcare Equipment does not list any Level 2 or Level 3 numbers and titles specifically for animal healthcare equipment. Is it intended that "healthcare" not be distinguished between humans and animals?

I have a daughter-in-law who is a veterinary technician. Part of her job is to perform CAT scans on cats. She has commented that veterinary medicine is very comparable in terms of procedures and medications to human medicine, although the differences are quite substantial. (I hope my health insurer doesn't save costs by making me sleep in a cage the next time I'm hospitalized.)

So, making up a new Level 2 number and title such as 11 96 00 Animal Care Equipment would seem ok, although I'd make up a "medium scope" Level 2 number and title such as 11 96 03 Miscellaneous Animal Care Equipment.

Or you could dump it in Section 49 10 00 Miscellaneous Stuff, along with other stuff that doesn't fit in the established Level 2 headings of MasterFormat.

Note how under the wisdom of MF04 there is a Level 2 number and title 11 70 00 Healthcare Equipment and Level 2 numbers 11 71 00 through 11 77 00. Two Level 2's? The first with the second pair of digits ending in "0" and the second pair with digits ending in "1" through "9". It makes it difficult to explain MasterFormat's "Levels" to someone who is rational.

I saw that "health care Equipment" was intended to cover both people and animal equipment but my reasoning was that the folks who supply animal-specific equipment would be unlikely to look at something called "healthcare equipment". and from the client standpoint, they do ONLY zoos -- and have sections that are zoo-specific. I thought that the section number would be more useful to them for other projects. Your suggestion for a more detailed number makes sense but one can only be so analytical at 10 pm after a couple of weeks of 10 pm type days.

I did see the Kennels, but these are not kennel type equipment items. I ended up with Seal drinking fountains (which differ from sheep drinking fountains by their height); a hand-cranked sling to haul a sick seal out of the water; a 1000 pound scale that is only 2" high and has a 6' long sloped ramp so the seal can climb up to the weighing platform... and then a section containing bunch of "animal kitchen equipment" which actually is exactly like lab equipment.
