I'm having trouble with the Work Results concept in MF 2004 & wondering if others are finding this, too...

From what I understand of Geosynthetics (I'm defining that as inclusive of geomembranes, geogrids, geotextiles, and filter fabric -- note I am not sure if "geocomposite" can also be included), the work resulting creates a separation, containment, or reinforcement, between layers of material.

So if you look in the MF 2004 index we have this PRODUCT scattered throughout Divisions 02, 31, 32, and 33.
Here's an example of the problem: If I have a project that uses the Product in 3 places:
1) a geotextile under Asphalt paving,
2) a similar, but different fabric between earth and a rock revetment,
3) and, perhaps also uses a geogrid for an MSE (mechanically stabilized earth) wall

-- I want to specify all 3 geosynthetic types in one Section (and if needed, schedule them), but MF 2004 is making it difficult to do this.

Comments?

There are many products that are used for multiple different work results - architectural examples would include gypsum board, steel pipe, etc. As a system organized by work results the product in MasterFormat is repeated in those locations where the product is used in different work results.

MasterFormat also includes the option of Common Work Results for __________ at the beginning of most divisions. This is true for geosynthetics at the beginning of Divs 31 and 32:
* 31 95 19 Geosynthetics for Earthwork
* 32 05 19 Geosynthetics for Exterior Improvements.
These are locations you can use to specify the product once to avoid repetition and refer to it from other sections if you wish.

Yes, Bob, & thanks... but I don't see the difference -- instead of using 31 95 19 AND 32 05 19 I want to only use ONE Section.

It is entirely feasible that my engineers will decide to use the SAME filter fabric for both locations!

And furthermore, Revetments is in Division 35...
So where do I go from here?

Yes the "Includes" statement says that it for work common to the Division.

I promise not to alert the MasterFormat Police to come punish you with 10 slashes with a wet noodle if you use one of the common work result sections for work in sections in other divisions besides that division!!!

Oh joy... I get to make a decision on my own?

You mean like deciding to not use Level 4 but reusing titles for my own convenience and sanity?

shhhhhhh...

Yep, last I heard this was still the land of the free and you get to a lot of decisions on your own especially in relation to a volunteer standard. Of course, you people out in California have to be more alert than most of us since your state govenment tends to make more laws, rules, and regulations!! Just kidding!!
