I already submitted on www.masterformat.com, but while I wait for a response there, anybody have any thoughts? Proposed: 22 70 ?? Gas Luminaires Description: All lighting in MF04 is under electrical. Rationale: What about gas lighting? Maybe it should go in plumbing like other gas powered devices and fixtures such as medical equipment or water heaters. Example URL: www.charlestongaslight.com |

Lighting is in Division 26 (mostly) because it is an electrical appliance or device. How about Division 23 (a gas appliance) or 32 (since most gas lights are outside)? |

I had thought about it but the Division title is not so good - we'd be saying they are using the gas lights for Heating Ventilation or Air Conditioning. Similar to the problem with keeping it with other lighting - I didn't want to call it Electrical since they are decidedly not. This is a tricky area where they categories we are given are almost too specific for a true "work results" classification. The result is a space will be illuminated, whether it is by electric or natural gas or a torch or Bic lighter or whatever you could dream up. I think that's why a few other gas-powered items ended up in plumbing, because they are decidedly not HVAC, like the medical equipment, and water heaters. |

Division 12 - specifically 1293xx Site Furnishings? I'm still assuming these are outside. The gas piping to them is clearly part of the utilities, Division 33, but the fixture itself is a separate entity. |

For this project they are wall mounted exterior sconces that are gas-powered. So they are not really site related at all. I'm beginning to write this as a new master section that will work for any gas-powered lighting regardless of location, wall or post mounting. By the way, even though MF04 book has 33 51 13 Natural-Gas Piping for outside and 23 11 23 Facility Natural-Gas Piping for inside the building, MASTERSPEC uses only one 231123 section for both, that includes "natural-gas piping, specialties, and accessories both inside and outside the building from the utility service to gas-fired equipment." I could almost tack it on just after that section, except it doesn't make sense to put lights under HVAC. Until someone's got a better idea I guess I'll have to call it 227000 Gas Luminaires. - although plumbing isn't quite right either... but maybe not as bad as heating/cooling or electric...? |

So you're putting the piping together with the fixture/equipment in the same section, if I'm understanding this right. Is there other gas piping in the project or are these the only pieces of equipment that are gas powered? (is the gas to these fixtures covered in another section?) In both Division 22 and Division 26, Fixtures have separate sections from the distribution process. I'm wondering if you have to put it all together in one place, or if you only have to spec the sconce. |

No, there would still be a separate section for the piping. There are other gas-powered devices in the project. |

Then, what you have is a Plumbing Fixture - 224813 Gas Powered Luminaires? (Leaving 224800 as the generic Gas Powered Fixtures) |
