A question for those of you who do K-12 schools ... I need to specify a kiln for a high school project.

Looking at the key word index for MF04, my choice is masonry kilns in Division 04 or a packaged industrial kiln under Division 42. I don't believe that a school kiln falls under either of those categories so would like suggestions on where it could be specified instead.

Thanks!

We do 99% K-12 in Texas. Most of the districts have a specific manufacturer/model they want to use. We typically put them in Miscellaneous Specialties.

Some of the manufacturers we specify are Paragon, Skutt, or Amaco. Usually, a 10-cone. Also, you will need a kiln vent. We specify Vent-a-kiln, and Envirovent by Skutt.

maybe related to 10 30 00 fireplaces and stoves ??? i'd consider suggesting a new category at 10 37 xx or something similar at www.masterformat.com, and using whatever makes sense while we wait for the task teams to wrap other initiatives up so they can review the suggestions at the new website.

This very issue came up here more than a year ago. I came up with two possible locations for a pottery kiln.

Vocational Shop Equipment seems logical for a school.
11 50 00 Educational and Scientific Equipment
11 57 00 Vocational Shop Equipment
11 57 13 Pottery Kiln

Looking at it from the perspective of a business that produces pottery, a kiln is process equipment, and examination of the equipment already in that category suggests this is a logical place to specify it.
42 00 00 Process Heating, Cooling, and Drying Equipment
42 14 00 Industrial Furnaces
42 14 29 Industrial Heat-Treating Furnaces
42 14 30 Pottery Kiln

We often say that section content does not assign responsibility for construction, but it also does not assign design responsibility. It's okay to use the 40 series Divisions!

Sheldon- Thanks! Next time I'll use 11 57 13 - that sounds better than div 10.
I don't think I'll use div 42 because it would be the only spec in that division in my project manual.

Well, since my question was based on what I need to specify for a high school kiln, I will go with the suggestion for the vocational shop equipment ... as much fun as it might be to have a whole division (42) to myself :-).

Thanks everyone.
