I have been with my company for 10 months now and we have a very special benefit that is low cost and extremely popular. (Our office is just under 50 employees) During the summer months, we arrange for an ice cream truck to stop by on Wednesday afternoons. The company pays for the ice cream and we take a short break to eat and chat. What are some benefits you've had at current or past employers? |

We have had Boulevard Brewery trucks show up at our office with all different brews and our executives handed out 6 packs to the employee-owners and root beer to those who preferred it At other times we have had ice cream trucks as well and coffee and tea trucks. Very cool! Gary Berlin, AIA*, LEEDŽAP BD+C Specifications Manager Burns & McDonnell :: Quality Assurance

My office has a few things like that. We have "Mid Summer Madness" during July & August, where there is a special activity scheduled once a week. We've had "Taste of Taylor" cookoff's, Newport Backbay Cruises, Taco Tuesday vendors, etc.... I think Ice Cream is next week. We also have a "Thirsty Thursday" gathering every Thursday evening, where one of our staff present... pretty much whatever they want. It could be vacation trip photos, it could be project presentations, it could be cool YouTube or Vimeo videos, etc.... The company pays for appetizer food and a bevy of beverages and we all congregate as a firm. We also have a long art wall in our main office (we have three offices) where we display art created by our own employees. Or first exhibit was full size surfboards with custom graphics by 4 of our staff. Then we had "Apres Architecture" photography gallery, where the company paid to print out in large format 4 or 5 images from a dozen or so employees that really enjoy photography. Right now we are featuring these amazing oragami creations from one of our employees. It's a nice touch. |

Alternating Wednesdays with fruit and bagels and celebrating weird holidays like Pi Day. And yes, ice cream social(s), too. |

In a small San Francisco office in the 1980's, in response to toddlers roaming the office and a dog that often came to work with their human, we had (one time only), "Bring Your Cat to Work Day". |

There used to be a bank in Alexandria, VA where the president used to bring his macaw to work. I worked for a firm in Baltimore that used to let us leave at 5PM on holidays and weekends. |

It may not be that unusual industry wide but at my current firm we have food, food, FOOD! It comes from vendors, consultants, in-house events and even occasionally appreciative clients. From lunch-n-learns to table vendors' table top presentations to 'special occasions' we are well fed. One has to be judicious in his consumption of these tasty treats. Pastries are often divided among 3 or 4 people so we can sample a few. One day a product rep brought croissants, fruit, and juice as an enticement to look at her line of floor coverings. I had to take a picture of one croissant beside an architects scale because it was as big as a Nerf football - easily 7 inches long and 4 inches across! By the way, it's not easy to find a scale in the office these days. |

No vacation pay. No expense account. No matching contribution to a retirement account. But: A 10 second commute. Swimming breaks. An open-air office (roof overhead but no walls)surrounded by chirping birds. Dog at my feet. Barefoot, shirtless. And deducting household expenses. Ah! The benefits of being self-employed and working at home in Southern California. Michael Chusid, RA FCSI CCS www.chusid.com www.buildingproduct.guru |

In addition to food-infused social events such as those others have mentioned, we have an annual bocce tournament - a great way to get to know other staff and have a blast on a sunny summer lunchtime. |
